The beauty of freelancing is I have control of when to work and how much work to do in a day. The downside is that my days are scheduled by the hour so slacking off is not an option. That's why I'm more than happy to tag along whenever he effortlessly comes up with spontaneous road trips that change-up our dates and give us a much needed R&R together. Starting the year in Baguio It would have been a regular to-the-mall Saturday afternoon, but instead I brought with me a backpack full of necessities and we're off to the 90's Summer capital of the Philippines. In five hours, we discovered new music in Spotify, ogled at the landscape and views, mobile booked to Newtown Plaza Hotel (thank you Agoda!), and were in the cold plateau by the time evening struck. First agenda: dinner. Baguio is known for its collection of dining destinations and we're willing prisoners to many of them. Our first choice, always, is Pizza Volante where we automatically order shrimp pizza, carbonara, strawberry shake, milk shake. Here's proof that it is our ultimate favorite. Going around Baguio is never a problem. It's the type of place where walking is a welcome mode of transportation (unswept and canal-smelling sidewalks aside). There's an abundance of cabs and we always raved about how drivers here give you your change up to last centavo. But since Baguio is easily accessible to us and many others, the traffic is comparable to Metro Manila. On board a cab driven by a stereotypical tourist-friendly young man, we headed to somewhere new - Baguio Craft Brewery. Neighborhood beer brewing is the new fad so it's not surprising to see one flocked by locals and tourists in Baguio. They have flavored beers and beers that will give you a taste of what's offered in other countries. Tagaytay week-ender Tagaytay food trip has become an alternative weekend activity for busy busy bees from Manila. And busy busy bees like us went straight to Tagaytay on a Friday night. Silent Hill type of fog greeted us as we went straight for Morielli's. That night was the first time we walked in a hotel without booking online. The Lake wasn't a wise money-choice - the room was small and the hotel itself is starting to look its age. But the view is fantastic! On the way back to Manila, we came across Rekados. It's by the highway as you leave Tagaytay - one of those "oh what's that" type of places. Rekados was the right choice for lunch - gambas was sufficiently seasoned, liempo was soft and sweet-savory marinated, churros was crispy on the outside but soft inside, and coffee was creamy and flavorful. Yes, coffee for lunch. For a planner like me, anything unexpected may mean an hour of re-doing my schedule! But for his spontaneous trips when we discover something new in very familiar places, I will always make time.
